HOORAY FOR THE BUS DRIVER!
Make a special treat to thank bus drivers for giving safe rides to school every day. Talk about what an important job being a bus driver is. Then, divide students into groups according to how many buses pick up children at your school (include walkers and car riders in each group).
Give each group a plastic jar or can with a resealible lid (peanut butter jars work well), four milk or juice jug lids, and yellow and black paint. Let students paint the containers yellow and the lids black. When the paint is dry, place the containers on their sides to glue the milk or juice lids near the bottom of the containers to represent wheels. Add bus details such as windows and lights. Fill the containers with snack mix. Close each lid and attach a thank you card signed by the group members. Designate students to present the gifts to the bus drivers.

Kindness Counts!

Teach students that an important part of school is learning how to treat others politely. Brainstorm a list of polite words and phrases, such as please, may I, thank you, etc. Divide children into small groups and give each group a section of bulletin board paper. Have them draw themselves in a school situation using speech bubbles with polite phrases. Place the drawings side by side on a wall to create a mural to display as a reminder of how children should treat each other throughout the year.

Under the Summer Sun
This simple display give students a chance to tell about their summer! In advance, post on a bulletin board a sun cutout labeled as shown. Begin by giving each child a yellow or an orange sentence strip. Have them write a strong, descriptive sentence about something they did over the summer. Display the sentences as rays around the sun. As a follow-up, have students identify which classmate wrote each sentence.
